Brake calipers are essential parts of a disc brake system, responsible for slowing or stopping a vehicle by clamping brake pads onto a rotating disc (rotor). Found in most modern cars, motorcycles, and high-performance vehicles, they play a key role in converting kinetic energy into heat through friction.
When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure forces the caliper’s pistons to squeeze the brake pads against the rotor. Calipers come in two main types:
Floating Calipers: Single-piston designs that slide to apply even pressure.
Fixed Calipers: Multiple pistons on both sides for stronger, more consistent braking (common in sports cars).
Made from cast iron, aluminum, or steel, calipers must withstand extreme heat and stress. High-performance versions may feature cooling fins or ceramic coatings to prevent brake fade.
Disc brakes with calipers offer better heat dissipation, stronger braking force, and quicker response than drum brakes. However, they require regular inspection for worn pads, leaking seals, or piston corrosion.
As automotive technology advances, brake calipers continue to evolve, with innovations like electronic parking brakes (EPB) and lightweight composite materials improving efficiency and durability.
